The leather buying guides

A familiar logo or a maker’s own design?

A familiar logo, or a design with someone behind it?

A familiar brand can be part of what someone loves about a wallet: the shape, the history, the recognition. A small maker offers another kind of connection. You can know who designed the piece, where it was made, and why it looks the way it does.

1

Decide what you want the name to mean.

Neither choice tells you everything about the leather or how the wallet will fit. Start with what you value, then look closely enough to see whether the actual piece delivers it.

2

Look for more than a recognizable badge.

Compare the leather description, layers, edges and interior. Consider the fastening and the way it holds your cards. If you are comparing prices, compare the specific products and the details included, not a general idea of what a brand-name wallet must be like.

3

Our designs are meant to have their own character.

Allfather is substantial and riveted. Ragnar takes the stitched bifold route. Tyr makes the card wallet its own. Troy’s Scandinavian family heritage is part of the thinking behind the Viking Line, but the leather, color combinations and construction are what you hold in your hand.

4

The maker is part of the story.

We make these pieces in our Bellevue home shop. You can see the work and choose between the specific materials and colors available. A wallet from us is not trying to borrow the familiarity of another company’s logo. It has its own shape, its own details and a direct connection to the family making it.

5

Choose what you will enjoy carrying.

If a particular brand’s design is the thing you love, that is a real preference. If you want leather with visible character, an unusual build and a maker’s own design, look through our current wallets. The right choice is the one whose details still matter to you after the first impression.

6

Choose for what they value.

Some people value a familiar brand; others enjoy discovering a small maker. If the recipient notices leather grain, exposed hardware and unusual pocket shapes, show them the individual piece and the story behind it.

The edit

A few places to start.

A few good questions.

Does a famous name guarantee a particular leather quality?

A name alone does not tell you all the details. Read the material and construction information for the specific product, and look at the wallet itself.

Why choose a small maker?

For a connection to the people and decisions behind the work, a distinctive design, and material details you can evaluate on the piece. Those are the reasons we want our own wallets to be chosen.
