Hermann Oak. A natural place to begin.
American vegetable-tanned leather, finished with your own story.
For our custom wallets, the leather is the canvas as well as the object you carry. We start with natural vegetable-tanned Hermann Oak, then oil, wax and buff each wallet by hand before your chosen artwork becomes part of the finished piece.
A real tannery behind the material.
Hermann Oak has its home in Saint Louis, Missouri, with a history dating to 1881. Its vegetable-tanned leather gives us a named material to work with, rather than a broad leather label with no maker behind it.
Natural vegetable tan is still leather.
Vegetable tanning refers to the tanning process, not to a plant-based substitute for animal hide. Natural describes the starting look of the leather we choose for these wallets. It gives the material and the engraved artwork room to take on their own character.
Our finish makes it part of the wallet.
On the custom wallets, we oil, wax and buff the surface by hand. We then laser the artwork selected in the customizer into the leather. The actual grain, color and engraving tones vary from piece to piece; the preview helps you choose a design, not an identical printed photographic finish.
Choose the artwork. Keep the material’s character.
A person, a vehicle or a place can be the starting point for your design. The leather is not just a background behind that image. Its natural variation and hand finish are part of why the result feels like a leather wallet with a story of its own.
